Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) is a medical condition in which extra bone grows with the hip bone. The extra bone does not fit with the others and they rub against each other which causes pain and joint damage.
In the hip structure, there is a ball and socket joint, this socket joint is made by Acetabulum. The ball is a femoral head which is located in the thigh bone. In FAI extra bone grown around the femoral head or acetabulum. This extra bone stops the smooth hip movement during any physical activity. Types of FAI
There are three types of FAI,
- Pincer- in this type of femoroacetabular impingement the extra bone grows out from the rim of the acetabulum. In this type of FAI labrum is crushed under the rim of the acetabulum.
- Cam- in this type of impingement femoral head is not rotated smoothly inside acetabulum. The bump which is formed on the edge of femoral head rubs the cartilage present inside the acetabulum.
- Combined- in the combined type of FAI both Pincer and Cam FAI are present
Symptoms of FAI
The common symptoms start with pain in the groin which extends outside the hip area. You will also feel pain while walking, standing, sitting and squatting. The level of pain can be so intense that it feels like pinching knife. You will also feel stiffness and tenderness in the affected area.
How FAR is diagnosed?
To identify the Femoroacetabular Impingement your doctor will ask different imaging tests,
X-rays will provide clear and good images of the bone structure, it will also show abnormal bone structure present in the hip.
It will show more detailed information than the X-rays, CT scan will help the doctor to see detail abnormal shape of the hip bone.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
By this method, more detailed images of tissue can be seen. The doctor can see which tissue is damaged or which cartilage is affected.
